Why Meditate?
I run into people all the time who tell me how much they want to try meditation but something is holding them back. So I thought I’d take a moment to clear up some common misconceptions.
1. I can’t clear my mind.
Ahh the number one fear! A successful meditation does not mean that you have to clear your mind. By focusing on something specific like your breath, you redirect your attention from thoughts, thus calming the mind.
2. I don’t have any free time.
Umm, which is exactly why you should meditate. Most of us are over-scheduled and over-stimulated. Meditation is a great way to give your mind a rest from all of that. Think of it as a mental detox. Most people are surprised at how fast the time goes.
3. I’m afraid I won’t do it right.
There is no right way to meditate. Letting go of that expectation is key. Every day is a different experience. Some days you might feel bliss, other days have a busy mind, and some days you might even fall asleep. Everything is right.
4. I have a regular practice already.
Great! This is a totally different experience. In fact, it might enhance your practice, bringing you to a deeper state of consciousness.
5. What are the benefits?
The research is there, the benefits of meditation are endless. It can reduce stress, control anxiety, increase productivity and focus, improve physical and mental health, ease sleep issues and enhance creativity.
